The Purpose of Jewellery
Most of us wear jewellery to accent our look and our clothes. But do you know that they have other functions as well? Let us look at some of these functions.
They can be used as actual currency. For instance, in many cultures, they are used as dowries that women bring to their husbands in marriage. In ancient times, especially in Europe, the Americas, and Africa, jewellery such as slave beads are used to purchase goods, services, and unfortunately, slaves.
Jewellery pieces are also used as functional items. Since the ancient times, buckles and brooches embedded with stones and beads are used for their practicality. Today, their decorative function has become more prized than their functionality.
Jewellery has also been used to represent an organisation, theme, or status. The most common example is the wedding ring. Couples wear them to indicate that they are married and to symbolise their love for each other.
Finally, in many cultures, people wear jewellery to protect themselves from evil and bad tidings. They are also worn to bring luck, prosperity, and good fortune.
